February is Black History Month!
In February, we celebrate, recognize, and remember the achievements and history of generations of African Americans, many of whom overcame a variety of obstacles and challenges to achieve full citizenship and integration into American society. Learn more about our nation's history by reading a book! Or try putting yourself in the shoes of someone from a different cultural background by reading a novel with diverse characters. |
New Year's resolutions may not last long, but books do!
Instead of making resolutions for 2025, have you considered choosing a one word intention for the year? A one word intention is a word or phrase you want to focus on to guide you for the year. Some examples include Present, Peaceful, Kind, Healthy, and Grateful. What's your intention for 2025? Stop by the library to check out our one word intention-inspired book display! |
Would you like to challenge yourself to read more in 2025? Ms. Wheaton and the CHS Library can help with that! The CHS Library may be closed over the break, but our ebook library is always open! Curl up this winter with an ebook or audiobook. You can read on your phone or computer with the Sora app (it's free!). Every year during the last week of September, libraries across America celebrate our freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment by highlighting Banned Books Week.
The American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) documented 1,247 demands to censor library books and resources in 2023. The number of titles targeted for censorship surged 65% in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching the highest levels ever documented by OIF in more than 20 years of tracking: 4,240 unique book titles were targeted for removal from schools and libraries in the United States. |
See the video below to find out which ten books were most challenged in schools and libraries last year. Then come to the CHS Library and exercise you freedom to read by checking out a great book today!

CHS Book Club
CHS Book Club is back again for a new school year! Do you like to read and talk about books? Do you like snacks, hanging out, making crafts, writing, and pontificating about anything and everything (but especially about books, movies, shows, graphic novels, and webcomics)? If so, the CHS Book Club might be the place for you. Come meet kindred book-loving spirits. We meet Wednesdays at 3:15 to 5:00 (or whenever you want to leave if you don't ride the bus). Email Ms. Wheaton for details at [email protected]. We haven't picked our first book of the year yet, so come help us decide what to read. Also, I give away a prize (usually a book) at each meeting -- but you must be present to win!
