June
According to the ALA, "a June 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan is often considered to be the beginning of the gay liberation movement in the United States. In June 1999, U.S. President Bill Clinton declared the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising every June as Pride Month in the United States.
Today, people around the world celebrate Pride to honor LGBTQIA people of the past, present and future and to reflect on the global movement that pushes for full and equal rights." Celebrate Pride month by reading a great book! The CHS library is about to be closed for the summer, but our ebook library, Sora, is always open. Here is a list of some of the LGBTQ+ books that we have in Sora (some of them we also have here in the CHS Library. Email Ms. Wheaton if you have questions. Have a great summer and read a lot of books! |
May
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which raises awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in our lives as well as increases understanding of the impact that stress, burnout, and trauma can have on our physical and mental health. There are many resources out there for teens and adults. Help is only a click, text, or phone call away. If you are struggling, please reach out to someone -- your counselor, your teachers, the staff in the Wellness Center, or anyone here at CHS. |
Another way to relive stress and take care of yourself is through reading. Have you ever heard of bibliotherapy? Bibliotherapy is defined as the use of reading materials for help in solving personal problems. Reading can provide information, support, and guidance on a variety of topics. Sometimes just reading about someone who is going through a similar situation or dealing with the same issues can make you feel a little better and put your life into perspective. The CHS Library has a variety of print and ebooks, both fiction and non-fiction, that cover many mental health topics. If you can't find what you are looking for, just ask Ms. Wheaton or Ms. Young. |
In May, we celebrate and reflect on the roles that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian's, and Pacific Islanders have played in our country's history. During AANHPI month, check out a book and learn a little about another culture (or about your own).
The CHS Library has many great books on the people of our diverse nation. Check out this book list, which has both fiction and non-fiction options, or swing by the library for a personalized recommendation from Ms. Wheaton. I am currently reading We Are Not Free by Traci Chee, an amazing historical fiction book about the internment of Japanese American citizens during WWII. |
April is Poetry Month!
Do you enjoy reading or writing poetry? If so, April is the month for you! The CHS Library has lots of great books on poetry including novels in verse. A novel in verse is just like a regular novel except that the story is told through a series of poems -- which means the these books are quick reads. Check out our selection of poetry books (both print books and ebooks) as well as our novels in verse. |
March is Women's History Month! The CHS Library encourages you to celebrate and study the vital role of women in American history by checking out one of our great books.

November Is Gratitude Month
What are you thankful for? With Thanksgiving at the end of the month, November is a good time to reflect on what you are grateful for. Did you know that gratitude is good for you? Scientific studies have shown that feeling thankful can improve sleep, mood, and your body's immune system while decreasing depression and anxiety.
Want to get started with gratitude? Try one of the activities on the right. A good place to begin is to write down three things you are grateful for at the end of each day. They can be anything, big or small, from your best friend to a rainbow to your favorite book. Here in the library, we are grateful for books, our amazing library TAs, our families, our pets, and our health (but not necessarily in that order!). |
Banned Books Week
|
Every year, there are hundreds of known attempts to remove books from bookstores, libraries and schools. That’s thousands of lost opportunities to explore ideas that fuel understanding. Words have power and access to diverse ideas makes all of us more powerful. Celebrate the freedom to read by reading your favorite banned book during Banned Books Week, October 1st-7th. Stop by the library and see Ms. Wheaton for more info, pick up a bookmark, or exercise your freedom to read.

CHS Book Club
CHS Book Club is back again for a new school year! Do you like to read and talk about books? Do you like snacks, hanging out, making crafts, writing, and pontificating about anything and everything (but especially about books, movies, shows, graphic novels, and webcomics)? If so, the CHS Book Club might be the place for you. Come meet kindred book-loving spirits. We meet Wednesdays at 3:15 to 5:00 (or whenever you want to leave if you don't ride the bus). Email Ms. Wheaton for details at [email protected]. We haven't picked our first book of the year yet, so come help us decide what to read.
