April is National Poetry Month!
Celebrate your love of the written word by checking out a novel in verse or a collection of poetry from the CHS Library. Never heard of a verse novels? They are books that tell a story just like a regular novel, but they're written in the form of a series of connected poems. The great thing about novels in verse is that they are usually super quick to read (because of all that white space on the page). Give one a try today! |

February is Black History Month! In February, we celebrate, recognize, and remember the achievements and history of generations of African Americans, many of whom overcame a variety of obstacles and challenges to achieve full citizenship and integration into American society. Learn more about our nation's history by reading a book! Or try putting yourself in the shoes of someone from a different cultural background by reading a novel with diverse characters. |

Every year during the first week of October, libraries across America celebrate our freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment by highlighting Banned Books Week.
|
The American Library Association documented 821 attempts to censor materials and services at libraries, schools, and universities in 2024. The most common reasons for challenges were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ characters or themes; and dealing with topics of race, racism, inclusivity, equity, and social justice. Of the 2,452 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2024, here are the top 10 most frequently targeted. |

CHS Book Club
CHS Book Club is back again for a new school year! Do you like to read and talk about books? Do you like snacks, hanging out, making crafts, writing, and pontificating about anything and everything (but especially about books, movies, shows, graphic novels, and webcomics)? If so, the CHS Book Club might be the place for you. Come meet kindred book-loving spirits. We meet Wednesdays at 3:15 to 5:00 (or whenever you want to leave if you don't ride the bus). Email Ms. Wheaton for details at [email protected]. We haven't picked our first book of the year yet, so come help us decide what to read. Also, I give away a prize (usually a book) at each meeting -- but you must be present to win!
