I really loved this book. The author says the book was inspired by the novels Mrs. Dalloway and Forever -- I got the reference to Mrs. Dalloway right from the first page (and in retrospect, I can totally see how Forever relates) -- but you don't need to have read either of them to enjoy Release . Romance + mystery + slasher plot = a fun, gory read. Grades 9-12
This book has it all -- nonstop action; a great plot; brutal, bloody fights; a cooler than cool main character; and lots of twists and turns. Kind of like The Hunger Games (spectator sports! battles! revolution!) but about a million times better -- and it's in outer space! Book 1 of the Red Rising Saga
Grades 9-12
This book really speaks to what's going on in our society today about how men treat woman (and boys treat girls) and what is and isn't acceptable. It's an uplifting read that will have you cheering on the girls of East Rockport High School. Grades 8-12
This story is more than just a sweet romance: it has diverse and interesting characters, deals with the changing relationship of two sisters, and has a very relateable and hilarious main character. Loved it! Grades 9-12
Not only is The Hate U Give an excellent book, but it's also an important and timely one. A must read! Grades 8-12
Amazing characters and a plot full of action that does not stop, this one is a must read. If you like adventure stories with a dash of fantasy/supernatural (but completely grounded in a very realistic world) and a plot with more twists and turns than a mountain road, give this one a look. Grades 7-12
Book 1 of the Six of Crows duology
This is a gripping quick read that looks unflinchingly at how a family deals with loss and grief and pain -- and also, surprisingly, at race in America. Raw and real. Grades 9-12
This is a heartbreaking but ultimately hopeful book that explores not only the depths of grief, but also the joys and pains of first love and the possibility of healing and starting over. Silvera's first novel, More Happy Than Not, was an excellent book that has stayed with me; this one is equally good. Grades 9-12
I adored Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, and if it's even possible, I loved this book more. It's a gorgeous fantasy novel set in a richly developed world with characters you will love, admire, and root for. It takes a little while for Taylor to set the stage and for the story to get off the ground, but you'll be rewarded for sticking with it. Grades 9-12
Book 1 of the Strange the Dreamer duology
This is a topical book that examines what's going on in our society today in terms of race and police brutality -- but more importantly, it's a well-written story told from the perspectives of an African-American teen and a white teen, and the authors explore both sides with finesse. Grades 8-12
This book was such a fun adventure/survival thrill ride (with a smidgen of romance). The format comprised of interview transcripts, memos, instant-messaging transcripts, diary entries, and more made for a unique read. (Don't let the size fool you -- it's a quick read with a lot of white space around the pictures, text messages, and such). Grades 7-12
Book 1 of the Illuminae Files It's a little gory, but if you can get past the exploding people, this darkly humorous and satirical book will not only make you laugh, but it will also make you think about how our society and media respond to disasters. The main character, Mara, is a snarky and sometimes annoying girl who makes a lot of bad decisions including some inappropriate coping strategies, but she describes the end of the world as she knows it in hilarious detail. Grades 9-12
This book is a hard and emotional read but well worth it since it shines light on a society that often blames the victim. It also examines how corruption and power in a small town can keep justice from being served. Compared to other excellent books dealing with sexual assault such as Exit, Pursued by a Bear and Speak, All the Rage holds up well and has it's own point of view. Grades 9-12
"A lot of stuff that gives my neighborhood a bad name, I don't really mess with. The guns and drugs and all that, not really my thing." Ali's voice is so real that you'll think you're sitting with him and Noodles on the stoop in their Bed Stuy neighborhood as his tale unfolds. A great look into the life of an urban teen on the cusp of manhood as he deals with everything life throws his way. Grades 7-12
I enjoyed Yoon's first novel, Everything, Everything, and loved this one also. The characters are unique (and refreshingly diverse), and immigration is a topic we don't see much in YA literature. If you liked Eleanor & Park, give this one a shot. Grades 8-12
This is a sequel or companion to Code Name Verity, which I thought was an amazing book; this one is also very, very good. If you like historical fiction or books about the Holocaust and WWII, then this one is for you. Grades 8-12
Companion to Code Name Verity
This book proves that you don't have to read fantasy to enjoy a story with dragons, because other than the dragons, this book depicts the life of a fairly ordinary modern high school student -- one who just happens to have a very special talent. Grades 7-12
Book 1 of the Story of Owen Series
Violet and Finch are characters who will stay with you long after you finish the book. If you like realistic stories that don't shy away from the dark and hard parts of life (such as Eleanor & Park or The Fault in Our Stars), then you should check this one out. Grades 9-12
I wasn't sure what to expect with from this book, but I love, love, loved this story of courage, miracles, grit, and sisterhood. Berry recreates life in the 1200s in such vivid and meticulous detail that you'll feel the sea breeze and smell the bean stew. Just give it a try! Grades 7-12
The author describes her book as "Little Women meets American Ninja Warrior in a setting inspired by Greco-Roman Egypt" while her publisher has pitched it as "Little Women meets Game of Thrones meets The Hunger Games" -- but I would just say it's a great adventure fantasy story set in a unique world. Grades 7-12
Book 1 of Court of Fives Series
Imagine The Fault in Our Stars with a lot less romance and way more boy humor, movie-making, and inter-racial friendship. The narrator, Greg, says this book "contains precisely zero Important Life Lessons, or Little-Known Facts About Love, or sappy tear-jerking Moments When We Knew We Had Left Our Childhood Behind for Good, or whatever," but it will make you laugh a lot more than it will make you cry (and I do mean a lot). Grades 9-12
Full of humor and references to great movies, this book will speak to readers who enjoy realistic fiction and smart, funny, honest characters. Grades 9-12
This book is an interesting blend of historical fiction and fantasy, and it makes you think about how restricted women were not so very long ago. Grades 7-12
For fans of The Walking Dead and those who like psychological thrillers as much as they like scary stories. If you like zombie books, you might also try Rot & Ruin (and its sequels) by Jonathan Maberry and the Forest of Hands and Teeth (and its sequels) by Carrie Ryan. Grades 9-12
