The Luis Ortega Survival Club by Sonora Reyes

• Sixteen year old Ariana Ruiz is self-diagnosed as autistic and selectively mute, which means she only talks when she feels really comfortable around people.  When a popular boy, Luis, befriends her, Ari is elated and goes to a party with him where they have sex.
  
• Afterwards, Ari is not sure how she feels about what happened.  She didn’t say no to the encounter, but she also didn’t say yes.  When rumors start spreading about Ari and boys start hitting on her, she blame’s Luis’ ex, Shawni, for starting the gossip – but she also begins to realize that what happened to her was assault.
  
• Later, Ari finds a note in her locker that says “Me too” which leads her to a group of exes and former friends who have all been hurt by Luis.  They band together, determined to get revenge – but will their plans succeed?

Grades 9-12

This book has so much to say about consent, standing up for yourself, and finding your voice.  Ariana is a unique, neurodivergent character, and it’s a joy to watch her connect with friends who accept and support her.
